Adult Crime, Adult Time
Collier feels that the Juvenile Justice System needs to be revamp. Since 1965 she says the number of 12 year old arrest for violent crimes has doubled and for 13 &14 year old has tripled. I feel that system that is in place is good but could use some adjustments. The fact that kids as young as 13 are killing and doing other violent crimes is silly. I think if kids that young are doing violent crimes like that they should arrest they parents and question them. She feels that the system is doing a poor job at treatment as well as punishment. I feel Linda Collier has been around juveniles for the most part of her career and she has seen the ins and outs of the court system. I feel she wants to make a differnece in the young peoples lives. She feels some of the kids get mistreated and she wants to help them. And the face that volent crimes are becoming more prevalent among juveniles. She wonders why there hasnt been a major overhaul of justice laws.
You bring up a good point that the parents should be questioned when their children commit such violent crimes. But on the other hand, what about children whose parents want them to be so perfect that they start to rebel? I think talking to the parents would help to answer some questions, but it would also cause more legal problems since the parents are not the ones who committed the crime. I think the parents do need to step up and take some responsibility, but overall the child needs to be punished according to the crime. If a 12 year old kills someone, they should be sent to jail for the same amount of a time an adult would be. Sending them to jail until they are 21 might only teach them that they can get away with their crime without proper punishment.
ReplyDeleteI always wondered myself what some people's family life was like after hearing of an unthinkable crime. After all anyone under 18 is under the care of their parents, so i agree there should be something there. But overall i don't think the parents should be punished since they didn't do anything.
